divisibility by 7

Hi, recently i came across a problem where it was required to check if a number is divisible by 7 . Though quiet an elementary task, i think its not very commonly known. This is what i found.
Test 1:
Reverse the number . Mulitply each digit of this reversed number by the digits 1(=1%7),3(=10%7),2(=100%7),6(=1000%7),4(=10000%7),5(=100000%7) consequtively till all digits are covered. Sum the products. If this value is divisible by 7 then the original number is too.
Actually these numbers are the cyclic remainders of division by 7.
Test 2:
Take the last digit of the number and subtract it from the number formed by the remaining digits.If this value is divisible by 7 then the original number is too. We can do it recursively to reduce the number .

Adding Javadoc of a jar in eclipse

Hi, recently i was facing with this problem of how to add the javadoc files of a jar in eclipse. I used netbeans earlier in which it was a simple process but here its not so straightforward.
First go to configure build-path of the project and select the jar in libraries tab. On expanding the jar file add the javadoc location to it and you'r done.

Finding the shortest distance connecting 3 points

I came across another interesting problem, THREETW1 in spoj, thanks to hwk . Here we need to calculate the co-ordinates of the point which connects 3 points in shortest path.
For this problem we need to find the Fermat point . We first calculate the barycenter of this point from the sides of the triangle and then represent it in cartesian form.
This problem has application in finding the point where 3 points would be linked most efficiently , specially in cable wires and telephones.

Finding whether a point lies inside a polygon

Hi, it's been a really loong break. Well after getting into the corporate world, you hardly get time!
I recently came across a problem TETRAHED in SPOJ which asks us to find whether a point lies inside a tetrahedron or not.
It seems quiet an interesting problem as the solution can be extended to any polygon.
In this we need to find the barycenters of the required point and then check the signs of the barycenters. If they are same then we can say that the point lies inside the region.
The problem has its application in geometric modelling and in graphics.

I feel quiet sentimental as i write this. Its been 4 winks of time since i stepped into a place , getting where needs you to beat around 350000 more aspiring candidates. As i appeared today for the very last time for my semester exam i felt that this can't be it. I mean how could it end just like this , would there be no more bunking classes,tests, no Ctrl+C followed by Ctrl+V ?? Was this the end ?
After i finished the exams and stepped out of the academic building,I stood there in a haze just gazing at it. The very place, getting into was something big for me 4 years ago when i had once gone passed it.
It was on 28th April 2007 when i stepped in and found around 100's alike lined up in a queue in front of HALL 9 all waiting to enroll themselves. We all were tensed not knowing what would happen in a place completely different to whatever most of us had been exposed so far.
I was lucky to have Partho Debnath as my first friend there and my roommate. I still remember how in the first week there both of us would explore most of the rooms of Hall 9 trying to make friends and learn about them . It was a great feeling that people throughout India were under a roof. Then perhaps the most dreaded moments came when boys visited each others rooms to know which zone he belonged. (you know why?) We had friendly interactions with our seniors who embraced us into their college families and thus our journey started.
Time flew past and soon we were sophomores. I was again greatful to have Navin Kumar Verma,a.k.a Navin ji as my roommate who inspired me greatly to believe that All is well :). I also met Anand Verma[a.k.a baba] , who till date gets up at 6 in morning , does some excercises, freshens up and then only studies and yes who also goes off to sleep by 11 at night.
Tests, assignments, proxies and bunking classes summed up the next years and we were sophomores no more.
Third year came and with it the tension to get a good internship . Sab lag gaye daud mein (including me). Inbox of IIT professors were flooded and many industries too gave us
opportunities. I too did my project on Android platform which was quiet satisfying.
Well third year too passed by as we now entered into the final lap.
We were now the BTech seniormost and that gave a completely different though not new feeling. Soon campussing started and most of us got placed at good places. Soon it was my chance and i too got placed. :) At first it felt that now what? But then i realised that Mukit'11 was coming up and we had to make it large. It was a grand success with participants all over the world (we had some online events too.) Mukti ended , now what, two months passed by and entered April and it was project time. I would be highly greatful to Howlader Sir who helped a lot in my Cryptography project. What a guide!
Soon exams were knocking and though we had only a couple of papers and we knew it would end before we would realise it. So finally it ended within a span of 5 days and now i sit before my computer writing this and realising that yes this is it. Well one phase of my journey has ended but there are many a miles to walk before i stop. Its been a great golden period of my life, emboidered by moments like India winning the World cup. Oh! that tumbling in mud in Hall 9 to running on streets in the final year. These moments would be treasured for ever.

The Cup that matters!

Really thrilled today as most of you are after we won the all important battle.. yes the cup that matters the most is finally with us, and we can now proudly say that yes we are the CHAMPIONS of the cricketing world.

It was a dream come true and perhaps the only achievement left to achieve for the greatest cricketer on Earth, the great Sachin Tendulkar. What hasn't he done for the INDIAN cricket!! and aptly Virat Kohli says, "..he has carried the INDIAN cricket on his shoulders for the past 21 years and we are just carrying him on our shoulders for sometime.." after the historic win.

I believe what Gary and Dhoni have done and made this INDIAN cricket team is remarkable specially after all the controversies under Greg Chappel era. Gary now seems just another INDIAN .. :)
The attitude of MSD is immense and you could sense it with the way he ended the match, the way he spoke and silenced the critics by his bat.. as they say.. "bite is more effective than the bark"!

For us(me and all those in 2007-2011 batch) it couldn't have been a better adieu to our golden period of life. They won it for us when we entered this phase and they gifted us with even a bigger Cup when we are about to embark on the Corporate journey of our lives.
Often we used to cherish the moments when we won the T-20 world cup only to relive it now even in a bigger style.
I once again feel honoured to be an INDIAN and can proudly say to have lived in an era where GOD lived amongst us.

Fun with perl-- Terminal Animation

Here's some fun for you. Want to turn you terminal to a live aquarium with sharks and ships roaming around?? Here's what you need to do:
1. Install Term-Animation from here
2. Extract the package using tar -xvf filename
3. cd to the directory formed after extraction and run :
perl Makefile.PL && make && make test
4. sudo make install
5. Install AsciiAquarium from here.
6. cd to the directory and type sudo cp asciiquarium /usr/local/bin
7. sudo chmod 0755 /usr/local/bin/asciiquarium
8. Now to test the application , type:
/usr/local/bin/asciiquarium
or
perl /usr/local/bin/asciiquarium

Installing NS2 in Ubuntu gets easy

Hi friends, the following is one of the easy procedures to get ns2 (Network Simulator) running on Ubuntu:
1.Download the .rar file form here.
2. Now extract it (u need unrar programme for that).
3. You would find some .deb packages. Just right click on each and choose "Open with Package Installer".
4. Open the terminal and type: ns . If you see a % sign then you have successfully installed ns2
5. Now to test the simulator, type in terminal : ns example.tcl and a simulator should pop up.(You need to write a sample tcl for this or you may donwload the example tcl file from here).
That's it , congratulations,you have installed ns2 without much hasstles i suppose. :)

P.S:
1. While installing the packages with the package manager, some error messages may come , so leave those packages, and proceed with next and then come back to it.

2. A tutorial on ns and tcl can be accessed here.
3. Through the above method one won't be able to edit the source code of ns , so for that one can downlaod the ns-allinone RC7 from here . Extract it and do ./install . Then one needs to add some path variables in ~/.bashrc file (you will be told after the install process) and then run ./validate inside the ns folder

The Beginnning of Another End

It gives me immense pleasure to say that Mukti 11.2 ended in great spirits- The spirit of Openness and collaboration, contribution and encouragement.
Sadly it was my last Mukti as a co-ordinator but indeed the journey's been memorable.
Day 1:
Mukti 11.2 started with speeches from our Director and teachers who promoted foss. We had some wonderful speakers like Rahul Sundaram who started the day with workshop on RPM packaging .There was a great turn out and the workshop was very informative.
This was followed by some events. Later in the evening we had the workshop on Python programming(basics) by Kushal Das
Day 2:
The second day there were talks on Python Programming(advanced)by Kushal and then later Shilip Gupta gave some tips on Fundamentals of Programming.
Late in the evening i had the prelims of my event ,InCanity. Thanks to all for the great response. Only 1 of the qualifying team -"Madmen"( which ultimately were the winners) could correctly answer the question : "Importance of keyword volatile in C " . It left me wondering was it that uncommon??
Day 3:
At 10:00 am we started off with the finals of InCanity which was quiet interesting especially with teams competing to get the shortest code in a question.
Meanwhile we had workshop on System Programming in Python by Kushal.
In the afternoon we had talk on QML by Shantanu Tushar Jha following by Shreyank's workshop on Ruby on Rails.
After this we started off with closing ceremony by giving away the prizes for various events, with the best moments coming with Shreyank, DJing. Oh! take away his phone and he's helpless :)
Overall it was a great success, thank you all for being part of it.

Solution to .jnlp file not launching in ubuntu

Hi, i was having this problem of not being able to launch a .jnlp file , i thought that it might be some problem with the java installed in my system and was almost ready to reinstall it when luckly i realised that Sun java was requiered for it and the default i was using was OpenJDK.
So i corrected it and now it's working perfectly :)
Here's how you can do it to prevent any hasstles.
Type in the terminal:
sudo update-alternatives --config java
This command will present you the java options in your system and the default one . Just follow the instruction and choose Sun Java as the default.
That's it . Enjoy :)

FOSS.IN

This was my first and sadly the last FOSS.IN and as expected, it was full of fun as well as inspiration. Speakers and developers from around the globe had gathered for this event.
On the first day , i got off a little late from my room and reached the spot only to find a long queue for the ID cards. After the formalities, we (Praveen, Prayag and of course me) stepped in the hall.
The first talk was on Wikimedia by Danese Cooper who also said "Wikileaks!= Wikimedia" :)
There were several other talks but i attented a few which included :
Beyond init - Leonart Pottering
Failures of Fedora and what we learned from it -Rahul Sundaram
Day two was even more interesting:
It featured Fedora MiniConf . It included 6 talks. Rahul started it by getting throught the schedule and then Amit talked about virtulisation.This was followed by talk by Arun and then Ankit Patwari and then Shreyank talked about his Four Seasons Of Code.
Later we had a packaging session by Arun Sag.
The last day included another packaging session by Rahul and it was very detailed. Thanks to IRC :)
The event ended with a lively performance by Raghu Dixit , a well known band in Karnatka and the ambience was filled with excitement. Thanks to him , i even learned some Kannad words!!
It was an awesome experience and will be remembered for a long time .
Proud to use Open Source .

Convert .jpg to .pdf instantly! and combine multiple pdf to one

Hi all, recently i had to convert some .jpg files to pdf , i knew that it can be done via GIMP by exporting as pdf but going by the number of files , it would have taken a lot of time, so i googled and found this amazing tool called Imagemagick which one can find in the Ubuntu repository.
First you need to install it as:
sudo apt-get install imagemagick
and then convert simply as:
convert foo.jpg foo.pdf
~~Moreover i'm thinking of writing a bash script which would convert all the files at one go. It will take some time so keep watching.~~
Here's script i wrote to convert all the .jpg files in the current directory to .pdf:

#!/bin/bash
count=1;
for file in *.JPG;
do
echo "$file coverted to $count.pdf"
convert $file $count.pdf
let count=$count+1
done

Now to combine multiple pdfs to one , one needs to install two small packages:
gs and pdftk
next to combine use the following command:
pdftk *.pdf output combined.pdf
where combined.pdf is the new combined pdf formed.

Hi, it's been really long since the last post.I've been really busy of late due to campus placements and this i think will go on for another semester :(
Neverthless i've been practising at various online judges like SPOJ
and TOPCODER . They are a very good platform for one to build one's programming skills and the problems vary with difficulty.
I came across a blog recently about how one can improve his programming skills and would like to share with you all. Though it ultimately depends on how you go about it but here's just a startup.

Java plugin not working ?

hi i came across this problem that while trying to launch any applet or run a .jnpl file it failed to load. I checked my system and found that java was installed but not sun java ,it was icedtea . So i found a solution to it in ubuntu.
Go to System->Administration->Software Resources->Other Resources and enable to canonical repos.
Next just install sun-javaX-plugin. (where X is the latest version).
Hope it solves your problem.

Adding libgraph, an alternative to graphics.h in ubuntu

hi all, recently we were asked to write graphics programmes in C and we were 'suggested' to use Windows as Linux doesn't support the graphics.h library . This really felt awkward and i knew there must be some way out. By some googling, i found that libgraph was the alternative.
Here's how to install it in ubuntu:
1. Install the libgraph tar.gz file from here.
2. Next you need to install some dependencies , i.e packages:
libsdl-image1.2 libsdl-image1.2-dev guile-1.8 guile-1.8-dev (For fedora it's SDL-image and SDL-imagedev and the rest two are same)
3. After that you need to extract the downloaded tar and cd to it.
4. Next perform these:
(i). ./configure
(ii) make
(iii) make install
5. Next you need to copy all the libgraph shared files from /usr/local/lib to /usr/lib ,i.e
sudo cp /usr/local/lib/libgraph.* /usr/lib
That's it! now you may run any programme using graphics.h library and see the resutls. ;)

Adding a new java library to Netbeans

hi, i needed to add a new java library to NetBeans so that it becomes easier to code. I just couldn't get it how to do it ,then finally i got the solution on irc.
here are the steps so that you don't feel harassed the next time :)

1. Save the folder in the home directory, e.g /home/yourloginname.
2. Now, open NetBeans, go to the Project you've created and there you'll find the Library. There you can add a new Jar file .
3. To add the docs you need Library Manager which is under Tools. There in the Javadoc tab you can add the doc folder.
4.. Then you also need to add this folder under the same library package as you added the Jar file
That's it , njoy coding .

I was experimenting with how to make a fast tweet when i stumbled upon an article as to how can one tweet right from one's terminal.
for this you need to install a very small programme called curl and then open the terminal and write:

curl -u yourusername:yourpassword -d status = "your status message" http://www.twitter.com/statuses/updates.xml

and for those who want the easier way out can try for gtwitter but i think it won't work under proxy server, so better watch out !

Changing login-screen in ubuntu 9.10

This one's pretty interesting, i wanted to change the user-icon in ubuntu 9.10 login screen but found that from this edition of ubuntu users were not allowed to mess up with it , so i searched and searched and found that there was a way out!

open the terminal , type
usr/bin/gnome-about-me
and you will see a window pop up, here you can choose the icon of your choice!
You can even add new icons in the folder /usr/share/pixmaps/faces and can choose from them

install nvedia graphis card driver in ubuntu

hi, this was really getting frustrating, i tried installing the drivers through Hardware Tools ad also tried Envyng but nothing was working ! finally i got the solution , manual labour is sometimes more fruitful! . I downloaded the driver .run file from the nvedia site, switched over to command mode ( Alt+Ctrl+F1 ) ,stopped the X server ,by writing :
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop and then installed the driver , after that i started the X server
and was at last successful

Converting mp4 to mp3 in linux

hi folks welcome once again to this blog. Well today my semester exams got over and i was freaking out when suddenly i required to change a .mp4 file i had downloaded to a .mp3 format . This can be very easily done in linux as follows:

1. you must have faad and lame files installed in your system .
2. to convert foo.mp4 to foo.wav write as faad foo.mp4
3. next, to convert the .wav file to .mp3 , write as lame foo.wav foo.mp3

and yupiee you are done with

MOUNT ISO IN LINUX

Hello all! This time i am going to tell you how to mount an iso file an iso file in linux .
Step 1 : Become the super user

Step 2 : make a directory where you want to mount the image file
e.g. cd /mnt

mkdir dir

Step 3 : mount the iso file as: mount -o loop filename.iso /mnt/dir

A loop device is a pseudo-device that makes a file accessible as a block device. Loop devices are often used for CD ISO images and floppy disc images. Mounting a file containing a filesystem via such a loop mount makes the files within that filesystem accessible. They appear in the mount point directory using above commands.

any problem when updating to new firefox in fedora?

hello! this time i am going to tell u all about a problem which i faced recently while updating to the new firefox 3.5 from an older version in fedora 10 . Well , i downloaded the .tar file from the official site and extracted it but when i tried to run the firefox file inside that folder, nothing seemed to happen! I thought the read me file might be useful but it didn't provide any help either.So i searched the net but didn't get any satisfying answers .Finallly i removed the older version through yum and then ran the same firefox file again and this time i succeeded!
The next problem i faced was that the quick launch icon on my desktop couldn't find any such process so i followed as:
System->Preferences->Look and Feel->Main Menu->Internet
then right click on the firefox option and on the properties part add the path to the new firefox file in the command option and there you go!

It's a great tool which one can download from sourceforge . to install it just follow the readme file and after doing the necessary make commands go the folder where you have extracted the file and then you can perfornm the necessary actions

Water crisis!

It seems that crisis of all sorts has become a part of our life in the college too.A few days back there was power cut due to which we had nothing to do (specially being an IT person) and now water seems to have betrayed us.As i woke up this morning ,i found people roaming all around the hostel with buckets and mugs dangling in their hands.It didn't take long to realize ,the cause of the pandamonium.Yes,we were hit by a water crisis!.
I too joined the long run but it was too late.There was no water in the hostel and then Ravi,Anand and I decided that we must venture out other halls for they should be our only rescue.We went to hall 6, the best of halls,but to our despair,the condition there was no good.

Well I am writing this blog just after half an hour since the programme finished. It all started on 28th Aug when some of my friends and I were asked to be as part of the IOTA,a programme in which teachers from various colleges were to be given free training on open source and how to use it.It all started in not an expected manner as just before the start, the lights went off and worse still the weather turned cloudy making the ambience all very gloomy. The day ended like this and we thought that the next day the attendance would drop markedly.the next day was sort of compensation and we really enjoyed "teaching" the teachers. On the second day we showed them the installation procedure and they looked quiet satisfied,nodding as they understood.we had our lunch too and wrapped up the day with a few slides on open office.. The third and the ultimate day was the most satisfying, both for the teachers and us. This day we gave them details on how to use open office and gimp and showed them the advantages it had over ms office.. They really looked amazed at the progress open source had made .. the day went on and where we would return to our rooms , there was hardly anything left in us ..Hats off to the teachers round the globe who spent relentless hours like these upon us. At the end of the day during closing ceremony , came the moment of the day when one of the teachers said that she was very much pleased with the way we had taught them. and one of them even said that "if we would have had teachers like you then we could done much better!" ..well that was the most satisfying moment for us and then I realised how happy the teachers feel went they find their students doing well .... hoping for some more IOTA next year :)

Protect your grub!

hi all , here is an important and useful tip as to how one can protect the grub through password.

type " /sbin/grub-md5-crypt " on command line(without quotes )
you will be asked to enter the password and then re enter it. After that you will be provided with a md5 cncrypted password .. Copy it and paste it to the /etc/grub/menu.lst file at the top of the page just after the commented lines as:
password --md5 "encrypted password "

hi , i really am ecstatic at this moment becoze i've a solution to a very common problem .. This time its in java. In sockets the PrintWriter output stream does not clear the output buffer autumatically so u need to clear it by adding true as one its parameters .... It was really hectic b4 cming to this solution.

A common problem regerding flash-plugin in firefox-solved!

It's very common that suddenly the flash-plugin in your firefox browser stops working and whenever you open sites requiring flash (e.g. youtube) pop up with messages like : "Ether javascript is not enabled or you have an older version of adobe flash" ... but you check your browser settings and find that javascript is enabled and start to wonder. You then install the latest version of flash through yum or an rpm package but the problem still remains!!

So here's a solution to your problem: Download the .rpm or .tar.gz package from the adobe site and extract it. After browsing through the folders, you would find a file named "libflashplayer.so ". Next,make a directory named "plugins" in /usr/lib/firefox (Note: make this directory in the newest version of firefox if you have updated firefox e.g there might be firefox 3.0.5 and firefox 3.0.10, so make the directory in firefox 3.0.10 ) Just copy this fle into /usr/lib/firefox/plugins.. Close your broswer and restart it ,then check by typing "about:plugins" in the address bar of your browser,you will find a heading "Shockwave Flash"... Well thats it, it done! ... try opening youtube and see a vedio ! hope that helps.......

Back up im mysql- using mysqldump

hi, this is regarding a very useful; command in mysql by which u can backup your databases and transfer it to another server (which may or may not be mysql) .

to backup go in command promt or shell and type:
mysqldump -u username -p name of database to be backed up > name of backup file
password : *******

after this a backup file having .sql xtension will b created .
now to restore the database (first u must copy the .sql file to the computer u want to restote in) go to command prompt of the other computer and write:

mysql -u username -p
$password : ********

this will create the backup database and you are done~~~~~ :)
